Alaska coast hit by7.5-magnitude quake followed by tsunami warning

The coast of Alaska has experienced a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, followed by two aftershocks of 4.7 and 4.5 respectively and a tsunami warning.

Initially registered as a 7.7-magnitude earthquake, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has now downgraded to a 7.5-magnitude.

The temblor occurred at a depth of 6 miles (9.6 kilometers) at 8:58am GMT, and was followed by two aftershocks measuring 4.7 and 4.5, respectively.

According to the USGS, the location was 63 miles (100 kilometers) west of Craig, a town on Prince of Wales Island, and approximately 208 miles (335 kilometers) south of the capital of Juneau.

According to most reports, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is currently no widespread danger of a tsunami. However, a warning is in effect for portions of British Columbia, Canada, and southern Alaska.

However, Al Jazeera is reporting that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement, "Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter." So far, no casualties or damages have been reported.
