After sensitive documents were compromised when prostitutes and other guests looted the embassy in Bogotá, the Honduran ambassador to Colombia has lost his job.
The day
following the party, the ambassador's personal aid, Jorge Mendoza, was
found sleeping in a laundry area, and a Colombian man was found in the
basement. Signs showed that an orgy had taken place in the building.
Apparently the incident was so extreme, excrement was found in the
ambassador's office.
The El Heraldo
newspaper alleges that amid heavy drinking, party guests trashed the
offices. Mendoza's friends and the prostitutes then left the premises
with computers and mobile phones and the police are now looking for
them.
Jose Baquero, Police chief for the northern part of Bogota, said that
officers were seeking to question two prostitutes about the party and
the alleged theft.
It is believed that the stolen phones and computers contained sensitive
information on drug trafficking, as Honduras has become an important hub
for the Colombian drug trade.
Reportedly,
Ambassador Carlos Humberto Rodriguez was not present at the wild party,
held on December 20. Despite this, Rodriguez was let go to "safeguard
national interests and good relations" with Colombia.
The foreign ministry said in a statement: "In order to safeguard
national interests and good relations with the Republic of Colombia, we
asked for the ambassador's irrevocable resignation and Mr Rodriguez
stepped down, effective immediately."
Legislator Rodolfo Zelava said, "A scandal in our foreign service is a
stain on the country's name. Diplomatic missions are sacred."
